UU@Home April

Honor the EarthOur 7th UU Principle reminds us to “Respect the Interdependent Web of all existence of which we are a part,” and the month of April brings Earth Day-the perfect opportunity for UUs to honor our Mother (Earth, that is!).

Making a green home or church can sometimes seem like an overwhelming task; this month, get started in your own green ministry by exploring some simple changes:

  • Get the whole family involved in the 3 r’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
    • Turn trash into treasure and create gifts from used items
    • Set yourself up for success: create a home recycling center
    • Buy “used” when you can from second-hand stores and garage sales!
    • need more “3 R” tips? Jack Johnson has some ideas (and a catchy tune!)
  • Explore ways to save energy at home.
    • Do an energy auditand create a family plan to reduce your carbon footprint.Start a community carpool: honor the earth and make friends at the same time!
      • Commit to shorter showers
      • Turn off lights in rooms that are unoccupiedHug a Tree
  • Learn about the earth, climate change and green alternativesGet in touch with the Green Sanctuary Movement and bookmark the UU Ministry for Earth!
  • Share a book that celebrates our planet
  • Explore and support community gardens or create your very own garden and compost pile at home.
  • Go on a nature walk (and hug a tree!)
